None have failed me yet, last year I gave up being a trout, and the year before that I gave up shooting myself in the foot, and the year before that it was chopping off limbs with an axe, but you get the picture...

Don't worry so much about the calculus, chika. The trick is to treat it like a nice juicy detective novel - you being the detective in this case - and you'll find that it becomes much easier & very exciting indeed. I loved calculus - it was the humanities/ lib. arts courses that really killed me

good idea, ungoliant...thanks...I actually really don't mind the calculus itself so much as my miserable teacher (grrr...) though if I ignore him and do the detective thing, maybe thing'll work out...

I loved Calculus. It was Diferential Equations that had me snowed; something about being unable to understand the Packistani Grad Student who tried to teach it. When I studied Diferential Equations a few years after graduating, using the Corp of Engineer's Manual for a refresher, it suddenly all fell into place. Never really had to use either of them in the field, they were just necessary tools to simplify phyics and the higher engeering courses. And of course they helped develop the necessary problem solving thought processes. But that was in the heyday of sliderule calculations; I'm sure engineering, like history, is much tougher now, as there is more to learn.
I never was really interested in Math's really. I'm afraid your post is a bit like chinese to me, Grondy...

Yeah, Grondie, I hardly got to use differential equations on site, since building cross-country pipelines is not exactly rocket science. Pity, really, I loved it at school - although I did tinker around with it a bit doing some offshore stuff.
Btw, which branch of engineering did you end up in, Grondie? I remember you mentioning fieldwork before. And slide rules? I remember my professors talking about them back at school, but we had calculators then. Solar powered ones were the rage during my freshman years...

Mechanical: Hydraulic piping, cylinders, and whatever components they were moving through a pressure hull. Lots of corrosion resistant material problems. Some new design, mostly repairs. Almost all my work has now been cut up for scrap metal, which really could damage one's self-esteam except for the knowledge that the world remains un-annihilated and is probably safer now than it was before.
During slow times I also designed sanitary plumbing lines. There were only two rules to remember: 1) S**t doesn't run up hill; and 2) Don't lick your fingers.

Why? There must be a Rabbie Burrrns site somewhere with it on. And I really don't get maths at all. Tis all greek to me.
I can't stand math all by itself, but I actually like it a lot in physics and stuff...didn't think much of engineering, but I've been working on some projects recently and it's gotten a whole lot more interesting. I'm still more into theory and stuff, though...

I knew, when I was watching the movie, that the cave troll reminded me of something, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Today, though, it hit me. He told us he was from out of the country, but I thought he meant, like, Canada or something. I didn't know he meant Middle Earth. Oh well.

I have done a little presentation about harry potter at school (And my hair was rubbish that day even more then usual) so now a fewof my classmates are calling me Harry Potter, fortunately I don't like 'm Unfortunately they are on all my project teams... but.. well.. I'm quiting school anyway...

Nope Ungy, not the weapons, just their underwater transport and nobody was ever allowed to acknowledge if any were aboard, and mostly there never were, when or where I was. Glad my work is all scrap iron; now, if the flag ever does go up, I won't have contributed anything but tax dollars toward the destruction of mankind.
Good for you grondy! And I quit uni as well boring (didn't even pack my bags actually!) and it's not done my career any harm at all.

I take it you mean Ungoliant did Uni, I decided not to bother in the end, I was pretty close though, i had the place, I had the room sorted, and then i had a drink and thought **** it, what am I going to do with a degree in Literature and Philosophy? I really don't need it, so I went and got a real job, and spent 3 years getting drunk without getting a shed load of student loans as well! Wasn't far off the real thing but without the dull education part or the whole huge debt thing.
My parents didn't give me a choice! :P Took a year of Physics, realised that physicists get paid ****-all where I come from, changed to Civil Engineering & got bored. Decided on Mechanical in the end.
But I still managed to run away from uni for over a year plus in my last year! Wanted to 'find myself'. Went back in the end though.
But Plastic's right - it depends what you eventually want to with your life. I wanted to design & build things, & couldn't do it without that piece of paper.

ack...college...I just finished all my applications...already got deferred from one school, though...on Christmas Eve - that was a bit depressing...so now I've got to wait till April to find out if any of my other schools like me.

I applied to MIT, Yale, Williams College, Boston University, Tufts University, and Northeastern University. MIT's the one I already got deferred from...I actually don't really mind not having gotten in early there...I didn't get rejected, and in my mind that's all that counts for now... For about a week I was seriously worried that they were going to take one look at my application and go "Oh god she sucks we hate her" and then they'd call all my other schools and be like "Don't let her in anywhere ever" but that was just a bit of paranoia...hahaha...

Not many around, and a good one could earn around ’30k/month. Too bad I only discovered that *after* I started working.
And chika, why not the double major? The Pringles professor I was talking about did Mech E & Drama. And who knows, maybe you'd go on and design a better chip?
