______________________________________________

The format I've chosen is as follows:

Location Name ( References/Books ) Short description.

eg:
Quote:
Gundabad, Mount Gundabad (The Hobbit). A mountain situated at the meeting point between the Misty (Hithaeglir) and Grey mountain ranges. The location of the capital of the Orcs of northern Middle-Earth.

Right. I'll be putting up the entries + description soon. Any suggestions & comments would be appreciated. Smile Smilie

1. The Hill (The Hobbit, LotR), Hobbiton Hill (LotR). The hill north of Hobbiton, into which Bilbo Baggin's home, Bag-End, was tunnelled.

2. Water, The Water (The Hobbit, LotR). The Shire's main river, running through Rushock Bog, Needlehole, Hobbiton and Bywater in the West Farthing. It joined an unnamed stream from the North Farthing at Bywater Pool, and continued eastward through East Farthing to join Brandywine River just north of Brandywine Bridge.

3. Bag-End, Bag End (The Hobbit, LotR). The dwelling of Bilbo Baggins and his heir, Frodo, at the end of Bagshot Row, Hobbiton. Built by Bilbo's father, Bungo, around TA 2880 after his marriage to Belladonna Took. Its perfectly round green door with a shining yellow brass doorknob in the exact centre opened into a large, comfortable hobbit-tunnel along which many rooms such as bedrooms, kitchens, pantries, bathrooms, cellars and so on, were connected. Bag-End took up much of the Hill above Hobbiton, and was considered as one of the more luxurious hobbit-holes in the Shire.

4. Under-Hill, Underhill (The Hobbit, LotR). The neighbourhood in Hobbiton that lay directly beneath Hobbiton Hill. Bag-End was built within the hill itself.

5. Mount Gram (The Hobbit). (*) One of the mountains of the Misty mountain range, home of the Orcs that attacked the Shire in the Battle of the Green Fields in TA 2747.

6. Green Fields, Greenfields (The Hobbit). Village or area, probable location in the North Farthing of the Shire. The site of the Battle of Green Fields in TA 2747.

7. Last Desert, the Last Desert (The Hobbit). Barren, possibly mythical, lands far in the east of Middle Earth. Supposedly inhabited by wild Were-worms.

8. Lonely Mountain, The Mountain (The Hobbit), Erebor, Kingdom under the Mountain (LotR). The Sindarin name 'Erebor' is literally translated as 'single-mountain'. It stood alone in the east of Middle-earth, and was called the Kingdom under the Mountain when a large part of Durin's folk (led by Thrain I) settled there after the loss of Khazad-d’m or Moria in TA 1999. Smaug the dragon destroyed the kingdom in TA 2770, and remained there until he was killed by Bard in TA 2941. Thr’in's descendant Thorin II Oakenshield was killed defending his newly regained kingdom against an invading army of Goblins and Wargs in the Battle of the Five Armies, and The Kingdom under the Mountain was inherited and re-established by his rightful heir, Dain II Ironfoot.

Note: * - From 'The Complete Guide to Middle Earth' by Robert Foster. Can't find confirmation of this anywhere else.
9. Mirkwood (The Hobbit, LotR, Silmarillion), or Greenwood the Great (The Silmarilion). The name for Greenwood the Great, a great forest east of the Misty Mountains and the Anduin. Afterwards renamed Mirkwood around TA 1050 when the shadow of Sauron, under the guise of the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, fell on the forest. The Wood-elves, led by the Elven King Thranduil, and the Woodmen remained in Mirkwood, but Orcs, great spiders and black squirrels continued to spread through the forest as Sauron's powers grew.

10. Withered Heath (The Hobbit). Area in the eastern part of the Grey Mountains, breeding place for the great dragons that plagued the Dwarves of Ered Mithrin. Smaug the Golden may have originated from Withered Heath.

11. Country Round (The Hobbit). (*) A possibly earlier name used by JRRT for the Shire, which is nominally circular with Hobbiton lying roughly at the center of a 50-70 mile radius circle whose circumference is known as The Bounds.

12. Long Lake (The Hobbit). An oval-shaped lake that lay to the south of Erebor and Dale, and east of Mirkwood. Fed from the east by the Forest River and the north by River Running, it is the site of Lake-town (Esgaroth), home of the trading people of the Lake-men. At its southern end the River Running flowed out over waterfalls for many hundreds of miles to the Sea of Rh’n.

Note (*) - 11. From Grondie Smile Smilie
13. River Running, Running River (The Hobbit). Also called in Sindarin the Celduin. A great river that rose from the Front Gate of Erebor and flowed in a south-easterly direction for about 600 miles to its outflow into the Sea of Rh’n. It formed the eastern boundary of Rhovanion.

14. Dale (The Hobbit). A township of Men lying between the southern slopes of Erebor, and Esgaroth. Destroyed in TA 2770 when Smaug descended on the Kingdom under the Mountain, and many of the inhabitants of Dale moved to Esgaroth. They remained there until Dale was rebuilt by Bard after the death of Smaug nearly two hundred years later in TA 2941.

15. Moria, mines of Moria (The Hobbit, LotR, Silm). Sindarin for 'the black pit' or 'black chasm', later name for Khazad-d’m ('dwarf-mansion'), the greatest and most ancient of the Dwarf-halls. Founded by Durin the Deathless, Khazad-d’m was deserted by its inhabitants and became known as Moria around TA 1980 after the Dwarves delved too deep for mithril and awoke the Balrog. Refer to Khazad-d’m for more information.

16. Green Dragon Inn (The Hobbit, LotR). The inn of Bywater.
I have added every one of the locations on this page (up to this post) into the Guide, including complete formatting like bold etc etc...

If you write anymore could you start submitting them yourselves to the community board (here) and the official guide project module.

Thanks
