Celebrate 50 years of THE LORD OF THE RINGS with Alan Lee!
As part of its on-going celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original U.S. publication of The Fellowship of the Ring (the first part of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic The Lord of the Rings), Houghton Mifflin, Tolkien's official U.S. publisher for over sixty years, is proud to tour world-renowned artist Alan Lee across the United States. Lee has won international acclaim for his illustrations of Tolkien's books, and he was also one of the conceptual designers on New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, for which he earned an Academy Award.
Lee will be on a nationwide tour December 4 -- December 11 to discuss his long involvement in bringing the visual world of Tolkien to life. Lee's presentation will include a slide show and a display of a dozen original illustrations, followed by a Q&A with fans and a booksigning.

Thread: Alan Lee Appearances - LOTR

Man it would be pretty cool to meet Alan Lee! I'm headed down to San Diego this Saturday for the weekend, so maybe (time permitting) I can hit up the Book Soup stop in Hollywood on my way down, we'll see?

I know! It would be cool! Unfortunately, I'll be driving down to LA from SF on Friday night (just missing the SF appearance), and then I'm in a wedding the following day. Shucks! I hope others can see him though. If anyone does, let me know how it is, k?

So is Mr Lee ever going to visit the United States of Eurasia as well ?

What, if us fans in Arizona want to see the man, we must drive over three hundred miles!? Rubbish! But thanks Eruwen for the info...
WAAAAA!!!!! Leave New Zealand out, why doncha? (Well, duh, how big is NZ?) Actually it's land mass is larger than Britain's. Would you believe it? But let's just say there's only four million of us here, and there's literally twice as many sheep as people.

The only thing I’ve seen so far following his mini U.S. tour is this;
Quote:
Following his hugely successful tour in the US, Alan Lee has kindly added an extra signing event to his hefty schedule so that UK fans have a chance to meet him before Christmas! Alan will be signing copies of The Art of the Lord of the Rings by Gary Russell, a collection of some of the best sketches, paintings and studies by the artists that contributed to the films, including previously unseen material. We have just heard that Gary Russell, the author of this fantastic new book will also be able to attend! The event takes place on Monday 13th December from 5-6pm at the Forbidden Planet megastore at 179, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2. For further info or to reserve a signed copy, please call 0207 420 3666. Hope to see you there!

Sean Astin has written about his experiences playing "The Lord of the Rings" Samwise Gamgee role, in his memoir There and Back Again: An Actor's Tale. Today 8 December at 2 PM PST (1000 PM GMT) he was flogging this book on The Beat at KUOW FM. You can find and listen to this interview in their online archives via http://www.kuow.org/TheBeat.asp
Alan Lee will be on the show tomorrow, 9 December at the same time, prior to his appearance later in the evening, at the University Bookstore in Seattle. You should be able to find and listen to their online stream via the above link.
This program is also later streamed online weekdays at 10 PM PST via KUOW’ (thats like in KUOW squared) at http://www.kuow.org/kuow2.html, but I can't get it to work on my computer, which doesn't like the Microsoft Media Player and which is required for this alternate programing.

Alan Lee is excellent, and his vision made a big contribution to the movies. I guess Houghton Mifflin has progressed quite bit from the days they used an illustrator who hadn't even read the book to draw the jacket for "The Hobbit". A christmas tree and two emus - poor Tolkien! Well, you're in better hands today.

That was so much fun, he is awesome....though I think my mum got a lil bored. :P Ty fer the notice Eruwen!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Arwen! Too bad I'm going to miss it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY by the way!!!
