I am also having trouble uploading an avatar. I created one with the exact stipulations required by the site. However, I keep getting a message that the avatar failed to upload. I wondered if it could be some trouble with my fire wall perhaps? Help me out here fellow Tolkien loverrs!
I get the same thing. This error message appears at the top of the page:
Warning: copy(images/avatars/2053.gif) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /nfs1/tazonlin/webs/www.planet-tolkien.com/modules/edit_profile/includes/upload_photo.php on line 34

Taz has fixed the problem.

Images can be stored in several different formats (gif files, Jpegs, bitmaps etc). It sounds like the image you saved was one of the other formats. Certain software packages (eg. photographic or paint software) allow you to save images in these different formats, and interchange between them. It's simply a case of using the "save as" option and changing the format you wish to save in. I believe Amarie has offered to help anyone struggling to create their 70X70 gif files.
I am also available to resize pictures to a 70 x70 gif. Just e-mail it to rednell@planet-tolkien.com

I tried to upload the image but it didn't work, it said it was a bitmap file and not gif.
any ideas?
I don't know, I uploaded it now and it works fine...

Just right-click on the picture you want to download and select "save as" then choose ".gif and the destination to save the file and there you go.
Yeah I need friggin help.....I can’t seem to upload an avatar.....I got the last one deleted....but I can’t upload the new one....
It is .gif format and it’s less then 70x70.....does it have to be exactly 70x70?? if then I’ll send it to you Nell

Need an Avatar? Come to Etharions Avatar Emporium !!! It is located in the forum Website sugestions under Avatar Market? We have elfs, human, dwarfs, undead, monsters, dragons . Of course maybe someone else will have your Ideal avatar , so this is the place where that person will be. And if you are having problems with uploading your avatar ask here and youl find the answer sooner or later.The thread is in the element of development so be patient. Later on the avatars shall maybe be available for mithril but thats just an idea. By the way all Council members that see this please tell me if you like the idea. P.S. The best person i know for solving avatar trouble is Amarie the avatar handy-girl
The Avatar Market which you suggested in another thread seems an excellant way of spending hard earned Mithril. In the meantime, having avatars available at the site you suggested will help many members who are struggling to create their own. It would give Amarie a well earned break from creating them too.
Resizing doesn't take much time so I don't mind doing that (unless I get 300 e-mails asking me to), making/drawing/creating one takes much longer and I just don't have time for that now that I'm entering the exam period.
I saw Milambar offering to make Loni an avatar, I'm sure if one asks him nicely in a PM (and tell him what you would like it to look like) he will help. He made Vees avatar(s), and those are nice ones. And after the exams I can be avatar-maker too. I made vampyrs avatar, and some others, but they are not in use anymore it seems.
I had a hard time finding a right sized picture for an avatar, so I just used one that someone else had on their site (with his/her permission, of course). Now that I know people who can help me out, might have to take advantage of that.

ummm, hi. I'm having trouble with my avatar
First it asked for 70x70, so i resized it to that, i'm pretty sure it's the right size, because the red warning text doesn't say "must be 70 x 70 pixils." Now the red warning text says "Image must be .gif" Well i made my image .gif a few times, and it still keeps saying it's not .gif
Can anyone help please?
Make sure it is .gif and not .GIF and that it is less than 8kb, other than that... I don't know.
Can't get my avtar up either, but for other reasons. I get a long warning msg at the top. Gonna bug Taz on MSN later or something.
ya that's my problem mine is .GIF and i'm unsure how how to change it to .gif Aren't they the same anyhow? I've tried saving my picute as turin avater.gif but to of no success

I know it doesn't apply to you, Eth and Amarie, but perhaps the people having trouble with avatars have forgotten that only Community Supporters can have them? Or else I would have one. And will, when I get out of school.
I have been having some avatar related problems the last couple of days, and I’m not sure what the problem is? I created some new ones that I wanted to try out, but I can’t seem to upload a new image. All of the avatars I created meet the specified requirements, so I know the problem is not with those.
Every time I try to upload a new image over my existing avatar, it keeps telling me that the photo has been uploaded, but the new image does not appear. I have also tried deleting my current avatar first, then uploading the new one, but the site will not allow me to delete my current avatar. This is what I keep getting,

Yes, there is a problem with the avatar uploader as I have tried myself. I don't know if Taz is aware of it. I will send him a message.
Try uploading the avatar, then signing out of PT and then signing back in. That should solve the problem if everything is working fine!
The problem is that things are NOT working fine. If they had, I would have my dragon picture over there.

And all you need to do (when things are working like they should) is refresh a couple of times after you have uploaded the avatar. I then ususally get a small window with an ok-button saying something about sending info. I klick ok and then it is up. But things are different from computer to computer.

Cleaned the cache, deleted my history, cookies, tried several browsers, different pc's. It still gives the same error. Resized it, renamed it, been there done that. The funny thing is that he sometimes says that the upload is successful but then it still shows the same avatar. To me it feels like you cannot upload a new one. I PM'ed Taz a while ago, with the errors I got. One can only have patience

You will see it yourself eventually (if you haven't already seen it). It just takes a while sometimes. Refresh refresh refresh!

Yes, and just for the record, for any members possibly having trouble trying to change avatars, just delete your current avatar first, then upload your new one. When image has uploaded successfully, hit refresh once, and then you should see your new avatar showing on the page.
I have a file with those EXACT properties and when I try to upload, it says it must be in .gif format, but it already is!!! It's Frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could be me, but I don't see a nice crown under Findarato's name. You need to be a community supporter first, to upload an avatar.
That's what I was thinking!!! And by the looks of the dates on the posts, it looks like we aren't talking about old PT posts here, where you were allowed an avatar whatever your status.
You HAVE to be a community supporter to upload an avatar? Hmmm... maybe I should join... I'll think about it. Maybe when a newbie or someone tries to upload an avatar with those properties but can't because they're not a supporter, a message should pop up saying why instead of saying "must be in .gif format." Could be helpful... and keep people from saying choice words...
