I really appreciate the patient answers from the council members, and others to questions that probably seem obvious to those who know Tolkien's work inside and out. I've searched many fan-type Tolkien sites, but this is the first where I've actually learned about the world of ME itself. He developed a very complex world and it takes time, and skillful guides, to properly appreciate it. I'm glad to have found PT and hope it continues for a long time!
As far as a search box, there is one on the help file itself although it doesn't search through the forums. Whether or not it is possible to add a search box to the message boards is something only taz can answer - I'd suggest adding it to the Website Suggestions so taz can see it.
I think I speak for the Council when I say that we understand and accept that discussions will come round again and again as new members join. It is not a problem and I for one am happy to discuss Tolkien over and over again especially as I learn more each time I read the books or discuss them.
Having said that, I also hope that the FAQ is useful in answering some of the more mundane questions which, of course, people want answered there and then. The Council try to respond as quickly as possible to all questions and queries but it is not always instantaneous. The FAQ and the help files hopefully offer a quick answer to basic queries.
Glad to know our efforts are not in vain.... thanks Terrijayne and Tommie for the vote of confidence.

Don't ever be afraid to ask them, though. These Tolkien related questions are what makes the site tick. Generally it is a pleasure to help answering them.
Also, you may ask questions that others have wanted to ask but perhaps feel a little shy about doing so.

Would it be too difficult to put a search box on the top (or bottom) of a page where you could type in a one or two-word question, then it would search the site to see if there are any related "hits" on that subject?
A lot of questions being solved at the same time, saves explaining hundreds of times.

PT is advertised on Google search? I didn't know that. But of course, why wouldn't it be?
It's only the greatest of them all.
Welcome, from one who has not been here long either.
PT is advertised on Google search?
Yup, I just did a Google search on "Tolkien" and we come up as the bottom item on page one
So how do we get it to No. 1 on the first page?
Who rates these things, anyway? Is it based on the number of times that a certain link has been clicked on? If so, I can take care of that no problem...just give me a couple days...yes, I do not have much to do-I am a domesticated animal these days, I'm afraid.

So it is sort of a good old boy network.
There used to be, I don't know if it still exists, a website where you could vote for your favorite Tolkien website and we were usually in the teens and once in a while we were number ten out of twenty-five at that time; these were run weekly. With the advent of the movies the number of websites increased expotentially and I guess people lost interest in maintaining the system. Taz said we got more hits via the search engines than the voting site ever brought in so he gave up messing with it.
In my book, were still right up there, if not at the top, of course I never go looking at the other Tolkien websites, so I have a very biased opinion without any basis.
1. the most friendly site, accessible to anyone who is interested,
2.the most complete, encompassing the full spectrum of Tolkien's world,
3.the most rewarding, the mithril system and the friendships made here surpass the others' ideas of mutually-rewarding.
Of course, my opinion is biased also, but it has some basis in experience...trust me.
By the way, I have passed one hundred posts now-am I at Level Two Newbieness now? Once I pass 500, will I not be considered new anymore? I am not new to myself..
Technically around here, or at least as far as I’m concerned, you’re not really a newbie anymore once you hit 100 posts. Congrats to you on passing 200 posts by the way, most people who register at PT don’t ever even reach 100.
You’ve been contributing a great deal to the discussion in the forums since you became a member here Laurelindhe ilmarin, and we certainly appreciate it. It’s members like yourself who really help out tremendously to keep making this place better, and I’m really glad you’ve been enjoying your time here, and genuinely appreciate the environment we’ve tried really hard to create, and preserve!
I'm new here.
how are u all?
I found this website while searching for Lord of The Rings online reading library. I couldn't find any and then I found this. I haven't check out all yet and I don't know if I could read the book here but I'm sure I'll be happy to be one this community.

I don't know much about online books but I am sure someone here does. Maybe they could point you in the right direction.
Have you read any of Tolkien's books? The Hobbit......?
Welcome to Planet Tolkien. I haven't read any online books myself, or where to find them, but good luck with your search. I hope you like what we do have to offer here.
Vee asks:
Have you read the FAQ and did it help?
I sure did! It helped. But some info was still missing. But well, I can always ask a question so that helped a lot.
Was the email you received on joining informative and welcoming?
Yes!
Have you used the help files yet and if so did you find them easy to use?
Yes I did, I like the search function on it.
Things I missed... the difference between the writers guild and the fan fiction section, how to submit stories to the fan fiction section. And I still haven't figured out if the Taverns on the message boards have a special function or not.

I wish I knew the answers..........
The Taverns are a mystery to me. I think they have mutated on their own.
Writer's Guild and Fan Fiction......... Val is the one to talk about this....... when his boat gets in.
(Not that we mind answering, we don't mind at all! But the help file gives you the answer right away so you don't have to wait.)
The Forsaken Inn
The Golden Perch
The Green Dragon
My guess: The Green Dragon is for movie-talk? And The Golden Perch for book talk?
The Forsaken inn is still a mystery to me.
The rest is clear!! Thanks Amarie!
What about the other three taverns then?
The Forsaken Inn
The Golden Perch
The Green Dragon
Here is a logical explanation :
The Forsaken Inn is for the forsaken : people who don't like the LOTR movies.
The Golden Perch is for the jetset of PT.
The Green Dragon is for people who like Chinese mythology.
The Ivy Bush is a prohibited thread, due to political reasons.
Bah!!! The taverns cant be sett to a single theme! Thats their special quality. Like a real tavern or pub, its chaotic, free, weird and new!
Just so.... And with their selections of different topics on offer they each have their own atmosphere. Like real taverns, I have my favourite bits in each, but still tend to crawl between them all.

Oh and the Khazad-dumish Inn is a role playing roadhouse where we eat, drink, and make merry with song, dance, and the occasional bar-fight. Gimli_axe_wielder is the often absent proprietor, and I, Grondy am chief cook and bottlewasher as well as substitute bartender and hoser-outer. We have a lot of weird clientele as well as a rule that first time visitors have to sing a song in order to obtain their first drink. A tankard of Gimli's Finest ’ is the usual reward for bringing down the house.
Shhh Grondy, they are suppose to go to the Help file and find out for themselves, so they learn to check Help before they ask.
Then on the Home Page I read an article or listed and felt better. AFter that I stared at JRR's picture and something about it was so kind and gentle and comforting. So I thought I might read a post or two and was very very intrigued by the high level of posting and friendliness by the members.
So I nervously thought I would give it a try.
Now it is more and more becoming a lovely place to go to like Rivendell where things of knowledge and beauty and friendship are preserved and shared and one feels really well and at peace while visiting. And I have referred to the Help/Faq numerous times. It is very helpful.
So..........thankyou all.
*Dogs lie around where ever they can find a speck of shade with their tongues hanging out panting, during the hot summer days and nights of August.
I remember going through a whole phase with the Redwall books AND PT.
Hahaha... those were the good old times. EULALIA!!!
only here, I suppose I should rather say ELENDIL!!! or as Feanor might have cried: SILMARILLI!!!!!
Really, though, the silmarils don't make a good war cry.
or as Feanor might have cried: SILMARILLI!!!!!
No, the blame should be wholly cast on Galadriel... as the Canadians say: Searchez la femme.
I just wanted to say, I wanted to make an account using a certain email address but the email wouldn't fit so I used another one and once the account was created I changed the email through my profile and it worked there. Just saying but I'm glad I have the account now.
