Thread: MISSING THREADS?

Bottom of Page    Message Board > Website News > MISSING THREADS?
Site Reconstruction.

We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused in the coming weeks as we attempt to improve the forum. Over the past year several threads have been placed in the wrong sections which over time has had the effect of making the forum appear unpostThreadIDy and difficult for new members to navigate. The Council has come to the decision that it is time to do what we have been putting off for a while and have a Spring-clean.

We accept that without guidance it is difficult for new members to know where to post their first threads, but any topic that is not Tolkien related should not be placed anywhere except in one of the Taverns, and the section Website News is specifically for news about Planet-Tolkien, not about General World News.

After a lot of thought the Council has also made another decision, one that might prove unpopular with some members unfortunately, but one that we felt was necessary for the greater good of the site. Here at Planet Tolkien we have a membership that spans the globe, including people of all races, religions, colours, creeds and age. Our interest in Tolkien has brought us all together, and we have become our own multi-national, multi-religious, family community.

With this in mind, we have made the decision to ban topics about;
Sex
Politics
Religion
Anything containing swearing, lewd language or crudity.

A few of you might disagree with this type of blanket censureship, but may I remind those who do that this is a family (ie. children as well) orientated site dedicated to the works of Tolkien, just as there are many other sites around the Web dedicated to discussions on sex, religion or politics. We are sorry if any of you are upset by this ban, but we wish to prevent other members from having to read posts that will often prove upsetting to themselves. These subjects were just concidered to be too contentious to be allowed here any more.

I hope you all adapt to these new changes quickly, and I hope in the near future you find we have managed to improve this site for you.

Thank you.
I, for one, am glad about that last bit there. While I despise censorship I don't believe what you are doing here can be seriously labeled as such. This is Planet-TOLKIEN. This site and this forum has a specific purpose and that is to discuss things related to Tolkien and his works. While the taverns are a much less strict environment, that doesn't mean that, like anything else, they shouldn't have rules. I think most everyone who spends any time navigating the net has seen those BB's that have degraded into forums of profanity, hatred, bigotry, and malice. I for one would hate to see that happen to our beloved PT.

While many of us, myself included of course, have participated in these way-off-topic conversations, I think it's safe to say we can all do without them.

My thanks to the Council members who have always strived to make PT a friendly place, which has been, at times, an uphill struggle. You all do a fantastic job. Orc With Thumbs Up Smilie
I like the censor. I have also come across some bad sites, like Prog said, full of profanity and malice. I think PT is a very friendly site, and censors like this keep it so. Thank you to all the Council Members, you do a wonderful job.
Ayslhyn,

There are 2 threads with the same info in them. We wanted to make sure everyone saw the information. Your post that you are missing is under Website General Discussion and I responded to it. I promise, we did not delete your post or anything horrible like that.

Let's second that. Thumbs Up Smilie I couldn't agree more, in other words.
As for the serious confusion here: We are not BANNING religion within Tolkien, nor politics within TOLKIEN. But outside of it, yes. You can still talk about most non-Tolkien related subjects within the Taverns. But outside of them it is strictly Tolkien. At the end of the day were a Tolkien website and just that. You want to talk about any subject RELATED and within the grounds of a Tolkien medium, no problem. You want to discuss outside of Tolkien, still OK, but it's going to be moderated with rules set down.

I am sorry if this upsets people, but please this is not an open for discussion thread but more a notice of changes to come. If you wish to talk further or air you're views then you can email me personally at taz@planet-tolkien.com

I thank-you for your patience and understanding. And hope you enjoy the many new features the council has planned for PT.

In Fellowship.

Taz
