A new weekly study session is in the pipeline but we need to know who is interested and which book(s) you prefer to study.
The sessions will be on Sundays at a time to be agreed - 5pm (GMT - which starts on Sunday 20 Oct) or after.
Books - either The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings (preferably)
So we need to know:
Who is interested?
Which book you wish to study/discuss? If more than one please put in order of preference.
Ideally we would like people to stay for the whole course. Please add your name, book preference and any questions you may have below.
Thread: New Study Session

I'm definitely interested, Vee...and I promise not to cause any authoritative upheavals . Hmmm...what book? What book? Choices, choices, choices...do you mean a particular book in the Lord of the Rings? Or just the Lord of the Rings in general? Well, I would rather study the Lord of the Rings than The Hobbit, and if I had to choose a particular book, I would have to say Book III...(my second choice would be Book I.)
Now I need to figure out what time 5pm GMT is in Pacific Standard Time...hmmm...

well i would like to try it out too, but i live on the West Coast, which Pacific time)also. It's an -8 hour difference from GMT. Making your 5pm our 9am. no chance of me waking up before 9 am here, unless it's going to work
If we decide on LotR it will more than likely be all three, starting (where else) at the beginning.
As for times - we do have a problem trying to co-ordinate all the different time zones but it will be Rednell's decision ultimately as she is the one running the sessions. I did say 5pm or after so maybe a later time would suit some.
Could people add their time difference to GMT - + or - whatevernumberofhours. (If they know it, of course.)
You could, of course, move to a different time zone for the duration of the sessions.

Yaaay!! The timing couldn't have been better. I'm just about to finish re-reading The Hobbit today and was wondering whether I should go for an LOTR re-read or the Silmarillion first read!! I think I'll go for LOTR with these study sessions. Time's no problem for me. But, I figure these sessions are going to take place in the chat room? In that case, people who might not be able to attend can check out the log. It's upto the CM's obviously, I was just suggesting.

hey that's a great idea! The easiest way to do that is to double click on the that clock in the bottom, left hand corner of the screen. Click on the "Time Zone" tab, and then adjust it to GMT.
***WARNING***
this feature will in no way affect real time, and if you arrive hours late for work, don't come crying to me
5 pm?? I get up at that hour.
Seriously, if it's 7 pm, 8 pm or 9 pm (GMT) then i'll consider joining in. I'd prefer to discuss LOTR and maybe the Silmarillion.

I would love to join this study session Vee, but probably won't be able to use the chat room feature. So if its possible to use the logs (as Floyd suggested) then please count me in. Any book works for me as I love them equally. Looking forward to it!
When we ran the classroom sessions before we found Sunday evening 5pm Atlantic time worked well. That makes it 1pm pacific and 9pm in the UK. An hour earlier or later either way works for me as well. We tried Saturday night, however, I work on Saturday and cannot get in until 6pm Atlantic at the earliest, and the attendence actually dropped. We had almost finished LOTR when summer came along.
I post the logs the week following each session. Sometimes I am a little late as it takes time to clean them up. (ie remove ip's, activity script, etc). Comments on the discussions are aways welcomed and encouraged, so using the logs if you can't make it to "class" is fine, although you won't get the same "real time" response effect.

9 or even 10pm GMT suits me fine.
We know that not everyone will be able to make every session and the logs are helpful for that. However, it is a study/discussion session and we need enough interest and attendance for that discussion to be interesting and helpful. We welcome views and opinions and friendly discussion about them and obviously it is better if you are there, in person, rather than relying completely on the logs.
As Nell said though, the logs will be posted. And Nell, if you want, I am happy to help with that.
So come on - be there or.... the wrath of the V-goddesses will be upon you!

Oh, I'd absolutely love to be counted in for the discussions!
The topics that would interest me most would be:
1. The Silmarillion,
2.The History of Middle Earth series, especially Morgoth's Ring or Sauron Defeated,
3.Lord of the Rings, all three books.
I look forward to class!

if it's 9pm GMT i should be able to make it! How long are these sessions?
Did we have to own the book we are studying? Because i don't have Morgoth's ring, and most other H.O.M.E. books

It's unlikely we will study HOME because of the complexity of it and the sheer volume.
Sessions last as long as the discussion takes - usually a chapter a week. An hour.... maybe longer.

9pm GMT would be ok. 10 pm GMT is too late for me. That is if I have time to show up. Last year of my bachelor degree in constructional engineering... a lot of work. But I will try.
9 PM GMT means 2:30 AM for me Wonderful. That could be a much better time. I'm usually in the chat room then, so...
OK
The time hasn't been set yet and we need more interest so please, come on down and sign up! Feel free to state your time preferences as well as book preference.

Speaking of time preferance, keep it at any time, if possible, other than between 1:30 am to 4:30 am GMT. I am game otherwise. :P
I am completely lost with these times named. Please have pity on this European that is used to 24 notation. Are we talking about 22.00 (Amsterdam/Brussels/Paris time??). I have to admit that, like Laurelindhe, I would see something about HoME (a big yes on Sauron defeated, Morgoths Ring and The Lost Road), but then again I can imagine that nobody can afford these books. Can someone explain how these classes work? What to expect and such?? Please...

And Oslo. Yes precious, we are at GMT+1. 9PM GMT will be 22.00.
Unless you have that pesky daylight savings stuff like we do, then it is GMT+2, but that ends this month, doesn't it?
Yes my dear, this weekend to be precise exactly. I am not sure how this affects the rest.
Rhapsody - generally speaking...
We arrange day and time. Everyone interested turns up in #bilbos-study at the appointed time. Spend a few moments introducing ourselves, saying Hi etc to get all that out of the way. Then we discuss a chapter of whatever book, starting from the beginning. Nell usually leads these sessions and she will guide the study, prompting and prodding where necessary.
We keep the discussion on-topic as much as possible otherwise they could drag on for hours or days....... weeks..... years....... which is why we ask you get all the off-topic chat out of the way before we start.
The afterwards those who want to may carry on any discussion if they want, or repair to #tolkien for ale and singing.

As for the day on which the session takes place, i presume it's on Sunday ?

my cousin just finished his masters degree in Construction foreman. He tells everyone what to do, whatever that is called. He did the course in the MOther land!
I'll try and be there, if I remember to set my clock back, as Daylight Savings Time goes off on Sunday 31 October at 2 AM Local Daylight Savings Time going back to 1 AM Local Standard Time in most places in the northern-western hemisphere. Remember GMT (UCT) never shifts, that's why it is Universal Coordinated Time: well at least until we get a few colonies on Mars and a planet orbiting Beta Centauri.
OH PLEASE DON'T PUT THE DISCUSSION ON SUNDAY!!!!! because that's Monday here. At least I think it is. We're 12 hours difference in New ZEaland, and I think it's +12. But I htink it's +11 because of Daylight SAvings. Oh, and by the way I got full marks for my essay on TLOTR today for ENglish. So PLEASE could you take my time zone into account? Because all the cool stuff, like the #bilbo's study chatroom is always held on times where I can't be on the computer.....
I have no clue on what day it is, everyone just seems busy discussing hours and no days.

Congradulations on your essay grade Loni. I'm sorry, that NZ and OZ are on the other side of the world. Even if we could hold it on Saturdays, that would have you getting get up at 7 or 8 AM and any latter for you would keep Amarie and any Eastern Europeans up too late.
If we hold it Sundays at 8 PM GMT, that is 9 PM Oslo, 8 PM London, 4 PM Halifax, 3 PM New York City, 2 PM Chicago, 1PM Edmonton, and 12 Noon Los Angeles.
If we hold it any earlier, it will interfere with church on the west coast of the USA. That won't hinder me as I seldom go, but it might bother some.

BUT I DON'T CARE IF I GET UP AT SIX AM!!!!! I get early for school anyway. Just so long as it's finished in time for church at ten. Can't we have at least ONE discussion that I can go to? Perhaps we could have two discussion periods a week for the ones in different time zones, and we could discuss the same chapter each time? PLEASE???
Wow, now there's enthusiasm for ya
So is it settled on Sundays@8pm GMT then? Incidentally, for anyone in the (American) Mountain Time Zone that does not set their clocks back this Sunday, as Arizona doesn't, the appointed time will be 1pm for the study group. Egads, this time thing can be confusing!
Poor Loni! I'm sorry about the accidental exclusion. Congratulations on your outstanding grade on your paper, though.

Yes! Count me in! Time and day don't matter to me. Books I'd like to study are:
1. The Lord of The Rings, (all 3 of them)
2. The Silmarillion,
3. The Hobbit,
4. Unfinished Tales.
Can't wait!

Loni - I really don't know whether we can do this but we'll have a chat about it at the next Council Meeting.
No start date has been set yet and no time decided. Patience, preciousessssss...... we will let you all know in good time.
Excuse me, has anything been decided about this? I'm waiting eagerly.
Not yet Floyd. We are listening to what people want and waiting for a few more to show interest. Then Rednell will make a decision.
Soon, my precioussssssss, soon.....

You can take me off the list of interested people.

I have my reasons. Mainly other priorities at the moment.
Well you can always join in later if/when you get the time. No problems there.
Hey Amari’, you forgot me. I'm definitely interested, but I will be much more enthralled after Dec. 9th, when the semester ends. I have so many papers and presentations right now it's ridiculous. Ugh.

OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE!!!! I WOULD COME EVERY TIME!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!! (But still put me on the list of interested people, cause I can still come around 8 times a year in the holidays). BUT DON'T LET THAT DETER YOU FROM ARGUING ON MY BEHALF ON THIS IDEA!!!!!! They do it on TV, don't they? Screening something in the evenign on day of the week, and then on the morning on some other, so that everyone can see it? (In NZ, anyway). PLEASE!!!!!!!!! *gets down on knees and kisses boots*

Loni - we have discussed it but with the different time zones it is impossible. The logs will be posted and you can discuss them on the forums.
Do you have any idea what times would be possible for you - in GMT? You never know.... maybe.... one day...

Hi Haldir_lorienwarrior, welcome to PT! No you’re not the only person from Australia here, there are a few other Aussies about! Anyway, have a look at this link if you wish;
Where are you all from?
Also, just wanted to say that I’m interested too! I don’t know how many of the actual "live" sessions I’ll be able to attend, but I will look over the logs, and participate in the forums as much as possible!
Add me to the list too please

WEll, over here we're +12, no +11 at the moments for Daylight Savings, so let's see..... Anytime between Saturday GMT 5pm-9pm. Or perhaps if I have not much homework, Monday GMT 5am-7am. But I doubt you're going to get up at that time on Monday morning. And chances are, Dad'll be on the computer on Monday afternoons.
I wish to take part in this. 5 pm GMT is fine for me. If it turns out differently, I may be unable to attend. Up to two hours later and seven hours earlier would work, too.
I'd choose LOTR, but would attend for any other works of Tolkien's.
I am from a small coastal city in southern New England and first read Tolkien when Kennedy was president.

For me, 9 pm GMT would be preferable; 8 pm GMT would be too soon for me, but 10 pm GMT might also work.
Please don't make it later than 9 PM GMT. I've changed my sleeping habits and nowadays sleep at "normal" times, so 2:30 am is late for me....... *sigh*
6 am on Monday morning. hmmmmm well at least not as bad as some other poor people who hav to wake at 2 am.
