OK, so I am about to be announced clinically insane (by which I mean I wake up in morning thinking I'm an onion) by the hobbit forum community but i just had to discuss this with someone!

It started when I read the interview on this site with Doug Jones and my initial reaction admittedly was 'NO!! NO NOT HIM!! Elves are supposed to be 'fair' and 'beautiful' not creepy looking.
Plus, (I think) he doesn't look like he could be related to Orlando Bloom.'

But then I thought who should do it? It would make alot of sense to ask Orlando Bloom again because he will have aged since the lord of the rings movies, in such a way as it would look right. But is that too close?

Looking at the other posts here I think Richard E Grant is closer than Doug Jones but still not right... I mean, in my eyes as an 18 year old girl they were pushing it at the end of Return of the King (for ref see http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=1253)

And then I had this eeeeevil thought. I’m just going to reel this up the flag pole and see who salutes (and how they salute): Bret McKenzie should do it.

Ai, Figwit, that's why it would work so well!
It would kill a selection of birds with one stone: we would get a good looking King of mirkwood, Bret McKenzie would raise in status from fake elf to real elf and hence give the creators of Figwit lives something to do (as 'website is on hiatus') [i:19w56zml]and[/i:19w56zml] it would make all figwit hate mail void(sort of).
The make up is already so complicated it wouldn't be much trouble to make him look older, its not like elves have wrinkles after all just use lighter or darker foundation make his cheeks look hollower.

Only seen him in the 4th Harry Potter film, didn't like him as much there. My impression might have been heavily influenced by how terrible the rest of the movie was, however

Well, he could certainly look Elvish with longer hair and pointy ears, so I'm not worried about that. If you guys says he's a good actor I guess I'll have to take your word for it!

My local radio station (central Scotland) is reporting this week that Tennant IS playing Thranduil! Apparently he was interviewed about it last week! I can't find confirmation anywhere else though, but sometimes these smaller sources have some merit so I thought i'd post the news.

Then perhaps its a trumor???? And I could see him pulling of a grouchy elf king. But not the father of Orlando Bloom, whom he will undoubtedly be compared to by fans of the movies. Especially girls.

well, yes, i am and that's true, but they made Elrond look older than Arwen, and i don't think there's much of an age difference between Tennant and Bloom... So that might be a bit odd

Elves may live a long, loooooong time, but at one point Tolkien conceived of three stages of an Elf's aging process. Obviously from infancy to adulthood, then apparently a super-long adulthood without any apparent aging, and beyond that the Elder Elf (at which stage an Elf may grow a beard). I have a feeling Tolkien retconned this notion to explain why there were a couple of old bearded elves around. I'd have to hunt for the old post to get the details, but one of them old bearded elves makes an appearance in the Silmarillion. I forget his name at the moment, but if I get around to it, I may re-research for the reference.
