if you were in charge how would have the Great Goblin look?

(art by Justin Gerard)

big and bloated?

[img:1cxu0atx]http://www.microconstruct.com/shop/images/aow10.jpg[/img:1cxu0atx]

or smaller and older?

[img:1cxu0atx]http://www.davidwenzel.com/images/sketchbooks/great-goblin-pencil-study.jpg[/img:1cxu0atx]

and who would you have play the part?

I think it would be funny to have Bowie play that part.... but not have him look like the above Goblin King.... way to 80's for my liking.

my actor choice would be Ian McNeice

what are your thoughts?
I think bloated and fat works quite well with the repeated description of the Great Goblin as "tremendous". I'm fond of this painting[/url:1fkgzeww] by John Howe.
Nice! 8-) . Great Visual Post Brado1  .

Cool Howe Link Eldorion .

Glad you like it, GB. Howe is probably my favourite Tolkien artist and while I don't like [i:28cprzeq]all[/i:28cprzeq] I think most of it is very good.

Upon further consideration though, I'm not sure if he can compete with David Bowie... :P
... Comings and goings, comings and goings, days are too short... hopefully I can be back for a while now!

Hi everyone! Planning to increase my forum activity from just hopping on for one minute to track down any spam and then running off again. Thought this thread looked fun . And yes, Brado1, nice little gallery you put together . I always imagined the Goblin King as... not fat, but rather large and muscular, riding a scorpion... well, I suppose [i:1y3a4j00]I[/i:1y3a4j00] didn't think of this, but I found it on a game I played a bit back, Battle for Middle Earth II... great game! . Anyways, here it is.

[img:1y3a4j00]http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/lotr/images/f/fd/Gorkil.JPG[/img:1y3a4j00]
good images all! i like your pick durin! and i do agree with you that i envision him "big" but not quite "fat" but i do like that Howe image alot! as he would be quite gigantic!
Can't wait to see the Great Goblin, I'm sure he'll be pretty cool in any case. He should obviously be alot bigger than the rest  , i.e. [i:3ll3ux5b]Great[/i:3ll3ux5b] Goblin, but I don't know whether that also means he has to be much uglier. He should definitely have a senior kind of feel to him, not a withered old goblin leaning over a stick with white hair and a long white beard but he must have a feel about him that suggests he has seen alot and is very experienced in Goblin ways (I don't think we should assume that he's their leader [i:3ll3ux5b]just[/i:3ll3ux5b] because he's big, Goblins are stupid but not [i:3ll3ux5b]that[/i:3ll3ux5b] stupid), in able for him to feel right as chief. He should definitely have a grim face but not necessarily an incredibly ugly one. I like the thought of him having a deep gravely voice of which might sound especially sinister when he laughs, this will add to the scariness. Its just a thought, but I think it might also be quite fun to add a sense that the Great Goblin scares his fellow goblins (i.e. they scurry away when he gats angry at discovering Orcrist) and that they are all disappointed when he doesn’t scare the dwarves, who are still acting noble and proud (although he should probably scare poor Bilbo!).

[b:3ll3ux5b]Btw have a great Christmas to all those who plan to celebrate it! [/color:3ll3ux5b][/b:3ll3ux5b]

[b:3ll3ux5b][u:3ll3ux5b]Joseph Dwarf[/u:3ll3ux5b][/b:3ll3ux5b] as was [b:3ll3ux5b][u:3ll3ux5b]B’arelyn Dwarf[/u:3ll3ux5b][/b:3ll3ux5b]
I always imagine the great goblin from this illustration:

[img:16ni29xv]http://fantasy.mrugala.net/Alan%20Lee%20-%20The%20Hobbit/Alan%20Lee%20-%20The%20Hobbit%20-%2023%20-%20The%20great%20goblin.jpg[/img:16ni29xv]

but it could be something like this:

Lolz! Peter Kay in a rubber suit! Can't stand Dr. Who, I'm sorry!

Illustration of the Great Goblin looks nice, he has some very human aspects about him.

[b:241taqwp][u:241taqwp]Joseph Dwarf [/u:241taqwp][/b:241taqwp]as was [b:241taqwp][u:241taqwp]B'arelyn Dwarf[/u:241taqwp][/b:241taqwp]
I think the main thing with the Great Goblin is that he does not end up looking like Jabba the Hutt or some similar character from Star Wars. Make him mean and nasty like the orcs in LOTR and I'll be happy.
Yeah, I'm not sure that he should be too Flabby  . It's a little less intimidating than large and Muscly.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays J Dwarf and Everyone.

[b:3737wq2v]GB[/b:3737wq2v]
Thankyou for replying GB! Hope you too have a good Christmas!

Lolz! Can you imagine that, Jabba the Hut! I agree a look-a-like would be totaly inapropriate, but sadly, I'm sure there are lots of people who might disagree too!

I think you're on the right lines Dol Amroth with your mean and nasty suggestions (although they're kind of obvious!), he has to be able to scare us and of course Bilbo!

P.S. Where has everyone got to? :?: :?: :?: (EDIT)

Heres John Howe's interpretation, I like it although I don't really like the thought of him being fat to be honest. What do you guys reckon?

[img:11oz49vn]http://angel.cs.msu.su/~salnikov/gilrond/Images/John_Howe/the_great_goblin.jpg[/img:11oz49vn]

I love John Howe, he's definately my favourite artist these days, along with Chris Riddell.
I like that depiction, as I mentioned in my first post in this thread.
Apologies Eldo lolz, maybe I'll have a better look through previous posts next time I post an image  .

[b:2xwuavrz]Joseph Dwarf[/b:2xwuavrz]
I like the idea of the Great Goblin being really big, about the size of a troll in the PJ movies, but I also agree that he shouldn't be too fat. He is a king though of a miserable race of creatures so he would probably be very greedy and corrupt and so making him fat might be the way to go. He does after sit around in the mines and probably does very little for himself.
No problem J.D.

Thinking about it, much as I love the Howe picture, he probably shouldn't be quite that fat. Perhaps [i:2zgzqp2o]thick[/i:2zgzqp2o] would be better: sort of fat but also tall and broad-chested so he doesn't appeal quite so Hutt-like. Either way I still think he should be tremendous.
Right Eldo, he should look like a bulky Wrestler .

[b:77ndwdke]GB[/b:77ndwdke]
I just had a brilliant idea. The actor who can play the Great Goblin should be ... *drumroll* ... [b:2cbkrz5p]The Rock[/b:2cbkrz5p]! :P
The Rock is Too Pretty and is Too Chiseled (he looks like a Greek Statue  ). The Great Goblin needs to be more like one of those Massive Wrestlers with No Neck, Tall, Stocky, and less Muscle Definition. I'm thinking the Guy who fought opposite Jet Li in one of the scenes in [i:2p9fg3e8]Fearless[/i:2p9fg3e8], and also opposite Tony Jaa in [i:2p9fg3e8]The Protector[/i:2p9fg3e8]. I think his name is Nathan Jones, and he's an Aussie to boot, so he'd fit right into this production 8-) .

[b:2p9fg3e8]GB[/b:2p9fg3e8]
Maybe that Moria Goblin (being of similar size to the great goblin I think) that kills Thorin should have a 'no weapons' tussle with Boern before he meets his end  . Might draw wrong kinds of audiences though

Btw, not that it really matters, why the change in the imagery layout of the site, if anyone knows? :? :?

[b:34o2821k]Joseph Dwarf[/b:34o2821k]
I think there is some kind of system glitch J Dwarf :? . Go to the "What's up with the Forum" thread (In the Ideas and Suggestions sub-forum), Eldorion explains how to enter the "prosilver" visual format. It will make it a little easier to Navigate the site  .

[b:nipgm9p5]GB[/b:nipgm9p5]
Thanks alot, I have tried the prosilver format, it's alot easier to navigate you're right.
Nothing better than big, fat and sassy for the goblin king...

What's up friends? I have been around for a while but today I registered and wanted to say hi to everyone. I hope that you will all help me to introduce with this forums features.
Greetings, HignenGaHvela  . Welcome to the forum. It's nice to meet you, but may I direct you to introduce yourself in the New Members section of the forum?

Happy posting!
