please say it is not so, i hate Hollywood!!!!! not that Tobey Maguire is a bad actor, i just don't feel he'll do a good job as Bilbo Baggins

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

[b:1f6739ja]story[/b:1f6739ja] http://www.latinoreview.com/news/exclus ... -feet-8786

With the announcement this weekend that casting of "THE HOBBIT" film is about to start, what’s up with the role of Bilbo Baggins?

Fan speculation has been running rampant for the past year. First it was rumored that James McAvoy was a contender until Peter Jackson debunked that rumor.

Then Daniel Radcliffe was making the rumor mill until he personally said, ’Thanks. But no thanks.’

I recently got a tip that during promoting the film BROTHERS at the Four Seasons in New York last month, Tobey Maguire was having a conversation and was asked which director he would like to work with next?

Tobey’s answer?

’Guillermo del Toro’

Know what else Tobey said?

"We may have something here in the near future.’

Really?

Could Peter Parker be playing Bilbo Baggins?

I checked with agency sources and yep, it’s true!

Apparently, we’re in the early stages of talks between CAA and the producers of the Hobbit film for Tobey to topline the film as Bilbo Baggins!

Again, right now it’s that ’ just dialogue taking place between the respective parties.

Tobey hasn’t been cast and an offer hasn’t been made. It’s just talks.

It’s no surprise to me because that is what mega agencies like CAA do. They hunt for the biggest roles for their biggest clients. Tobey’s agent at is the president of CAA.

Even I was skeptical because wait a minute, wasn’t Spider-man 4 and 5 supposed to shoot back to back?

I did my due diligence and according to a source inside Sony, Spiderman-4 and 5 IS NOT SHOOTING back to back.

So technically speaking, Tobey is available after shooting Spiderman 4 which is slated to begin shooting Winter 2010. The first Hobbit film is slated to start shooting mid-summer 2010.

If you think about it, a star like Tobey Maguire would make sense and provide a comfort zone for the WB because both The Hobbit films are going to be very expensive.

I just don’t see the WB greenlighting a mega tentpole like The Hobbit films with a complete unknown toplining.

As it stands, The Hobbit hasn’t been greenlit by the studio. Jackson and Del Toro have been personally footing the bill for the development and the pre viz of The Hobbit.

Here is the wildcard: next month’s auction of MGM assets. MGM owns half The Hobbit rights.

In just a few weeks we will know who will retain those rights.

For this story, I tried to find out who might get those rights come next month, but I was stonewalled at every juncture.

Even trusted sources at studios were paranoid at violating the iron clad non-disclosure agreements sent out by MGM to prospective bidders.

So it’s wait and see.

From a marketing standpoint, think about how cool it would be to get a Hobbit teaser trailer in front of Spider-man 4! Slam dunk if you ask me.

So stay tuned as more develops.
While I doubt anything will come of this rumor, at least Maguire kind of looks like a hobbit. He's also not a terrible actor. That being said I think he's all wrong for Bilbo and doesn't belong in Middle Earth. I would hate to hear him do a british accent. Good thing this is mostly likely just a rumor. . .
PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Surely they aren't THAT desparate to find someone????? He just can't be bilbo!!!!!!!!!!!! and as far as I"M concerened, he isnt. :x
Who is to say how Westron sounds? Why not 'American'? And Tobe is very popular - with Americans. Where is the biggest market for Hollywood fantasy? Aah...um... ?? Bases do seem well covered. (Talking about bases, I wonder if they'll show little hobbit boys and girls playing baseball as Bilbo and Co ride their ponies past? Now that would be both hilarious and cute!)

Better still, some of the text for "The Hobbit: Movie Version" has already been written....

".... and Smaug swooped down in a hurricane of wings; but Spider Man, keeping his cool in the face of the great dragon's onslaughting furnace breath, sent out a super-strong strand of lycraweb, which wrapped up the great jaws. Spider Man pulled tight and the great jaws jammed closed. Smaug thrust and throbbed, then plunged wordlessly into the waters of the lake; it was Spider Man's turn to make clever jibes as the waters steamed and frothed. Spider Man then sang a little song,

"Smaugy got all webbed and wound,
And now nary a word, nor wordy sound
Comes out his big fat mouth,
Which once was as big as a house,
But it's now in lycraweb bound,
(His silence is profound!)"

And the Men of Lake Town cheered with deep lusty voices, and the Women of Lake Town curtsied prettily and bustily, and a certain man, a fruiterer and bowman, by name Bard, sat in a corner and got drunk, repeating the same refrain over and over again: "Another second and I'd have got off a shot....just one more second...."

Don't Panic, it's just conjecture. Extremely unlikely, unless he has a better British Accent than Radcliffe .

Not in a panic just yet, i remember when Sean Astin was cast as Sam and thought there is NO WAY that'll work.......don't get me wrong, it is not that i think Tobey is a bad actor, he has done some fine work. In my opinion there are actors who become that character, then there are others that are themselves playing a character, like Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise for instance... no matter what role they play... i can't get past that actor playing the part vs. being that character...
Tobey Mcguire is Toby Mcguire in everything he does (though i have not seen Brothers - heard great things about it) .....

I do believe that the role should go to an English(UK) actor, not that an American actor couldn't do the role justice, Elijah Wood and Sean Astin did a great job in LOTR...

i still would like to see Martin Freeman get the part...

would settle for Mcavoy

The latest Hobbit fan wank that's been making the rounds is that Tobey Maguire was in talks to possibly maybe perhaps portray Bilbo. The wellspring of this is a piece in Latino Review from yesterday. However, Maguire today over at THR.com stated for the record that that simply isn't the case. ’I have not met with [Guillermo] del Toro. We don’t have any near future plans,’ Maguire said. ’I don’t know if something got misconstrued or miscommunicated but the source was not accurate at all.’

The article also mentioned that Maguire had heard previously that James McAvoy had been cast and wasn't even considering the lead role (Peter Jackson has since also dispelled that rumor as well). So despite a few records being set straight, does that mean that Maguire being in The Hobbit could never happen? Well, Maguire elaborated that ’I love Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, and I certainly wouldn’t take myself out of the conversation ... if I was part of it. But I haven’t read a script or talked to anybody about it.’

So there you have it, straight from the spider's mouth.
Phew. Dodged another [b:xwjq1esa]BULLET[/b:xwjq1esa] ([b:xwjq1esa]B[/b:xwjq1esa]adly [b:xwjq1esa]U[/b:xwjq1esa]nsuitable, [b:xwjq1esa]L[/b:xwjq1esa]argely [b:xwjq1esa]L[/b:xwjq1esa]anky, [b:xwjq1esa]E[/b:xwjq1esa]ntertainers [b:xwjq1esa]T[/b:xwjq1esa]heorized-to-be-bilbo).

Thank goodness!
I hate the thought of Toby getting the role aswell, he's a great guy and a great actor but he's not Bilbo! I can't think of anything better to say than, Phew!

[b:3gdrykrl][i:3gdrykrl]Joseph D[/i:3gdrykrl][/b:3gdrykrl] as was [b:3gdrykrl][u:3gdrykrl]B'arelyn D[/u:3gdrykrl][/b:3gdrykrl]
definitely too young, and the uproar around GDT for favouritism would be horrific.
I agree with Mcavoy more than freeman-but he has a very hobbitish look to him
Tobey is a great actor but he certainly is no Bilbo, Thank goodness, i was starting to get worried that Hollywood would do something stupid like this
Well once again Tobey Maguire rumors have popped up. I personally think they are nothing more than rumors but that is only because I think having him play Bilbo would be a terrible decision and I think PJ and GDT are smarter than that.
Besides which The Sun "news"paper is the source. It is a rubbish tabloid paper published by Rupert Murdoch, known for naked "Page 3" girls (which is the best thing about the paper :P ).

[b:2rfgavzr]GB[/b:2rfgavzr]
I hope to Christ this is only rumor...!
From theonering.net, a welcomed voice of reason:
"The definitive answer I just received is ’No truth’..plain and simple..two words’it’s over. Spread the word"

There you have it. All I can say is, thank Gandalf this was just a rumor.
Amen to that!
On the onering.net message boards GDT himself actually made a post
"Two Words:
Not True.
-G "

This was posted Monday at 10:33 PM, not sure what time zone.

I'm now pretty confident that we won't be seeing spider-bilbo
Sad really - I was just warming to the idea...

stu8pid fat spiderman. could this be true?
Hey!
Blinding flash!
We've all been duped!
Tobey isn't going to play Bilbo!
He's going to play either Lazy Lob or Crazy Cob!
My God, those film makers are cunning!

Odo
I think they are going to get Tobey Maguire to play either Saruman, Smaug, or Beorn.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the role of Bilbo would not have to be interpreted by the original actor Bilbo (LOTR)? Because, the ring "delay" the age of the person who owns and Bilbo has the ring from the mountain, that is, his appearance remained unchanged since that time. Am I rigth?
Dear $$LLL$$$,

A good point you make. The problem, however, is that the actor himself has aged since the LotR Movies! That could be tricky.

Odo
You're correct insofar as the books are concerned, $$LLL$$, but the LotR film shows a substantial age difference between Bilbo in the prologue and Bilbo in the rest of FotR. That makes it even trickier since the new Bilbo actor will presumably not look like Ian Holm did in all that makeup (in order to make him look younger for the prologue).

Also, welcome to the forums!
Ah thanks Eldorion and Odo
Good point of the two!

Correct me if I'm wrong again, but in the book "The Hobbit" Bilbo had not 50? The production of the film would not be able to "give a makeup" in Ian Holm? Of course he is 78 years old, but it would seem more true to the book if it were possible.
[quote="$$LLL$$":2ivcfghv]The production of the film would not be able to "give a makeup" in Ian Holm? Of course he is 78 years old, but it would seem more true to the book if it were possible.[/quote:2ivcfghv]

They could probably give him the same makeup treatment/facelift to get rid of wrinkles, but I recall reading that Ian Holm wasn't exactly fond of that process. In any event he seems uninterested in playing Bilbo, for better or worse.
A terrible decision it would be if Tobey Maguire was chosen to play Bilbo. That's all I have to say.
Oh come on, he looks like a good Bilbo. Better than Mr Bean.
Too young and too skinny. :P
I have to agree with you Eldo . I think Tobey is a tremendously gifted actor, but he is too young and scrawny for the role of Bilbo. I could possibly overlook those shortcomings in a British actor with a bit of make-up and prostheses, but I would still have issues.

[b:2k3q0mks]GB[/b:2k3q0mks]
I've never seen any of Tobey's movies (except for about 5 minutes from Spider-man and Spider-man 2 each) so I can't comment on his talent as an actor, but I definitely think that it's important to get an actor with the right look of a Hobbit as well as the necessary talents. No one would cast a 6'6" actor as a Hobbit, no matter how gifted they are.
