Thread: Smaug ?
Is it pronounced Smorg or Smawg ? Always said Smorg myself, but have heard Smawg said quite
often. Its pronounced Smawg on the audio CD.

I've always said "Smawg" myself. I never really thought of saying "Smorg" since there's no R. Sweet painting, by the way. Do you know who made it? 
I like the painting too, it's very similar to how I imagine it when I read the book 
As to the pronounciation, I pronounce it Smawg as well.

I'm curious, is the 'r' silent, or do you pronounce it?
I tend to sound it as written, maybe from the fact tht I first read the book at 10! I can see how Smawg may be more accurate, but he's always been smorg to me!

I'm sure Ian Holm pronounces it Smorg in lotr
I'm trying to remember in which scene they say "Smaug" instead of "the dragon" in LOTR but I can't remember. Does anyone else?

Not sure who did the painting Eldo, looks a lot like the cover of the book thou.

I think he only says "the dragon", can't remember Smaug's name ever being mentioned in the LotR films.

I think you might have misunderstood me. Sometimes ways of saying things in Norwegian don't translate too well to English I guess

This is probably just the way my accent is, but I pronounce "Smog" and "Smawg" essentially the same. 
That's because you're a US American. 
I'm pretty good with accents having grown up a bit in England and then living in the US so many years, doing German for 4 years, and then studying the Indo-European language groups for a couple of years. I can usually figure out where most people of European background are from by their accents from Australia to Austria just by listening to their accents. I can usually get general regions in the UK and the US pretty accurately too.
I have a little trouble distinguishing Baltic region accents and Slavic region accents (I can usually tell the general region, but not the individual countries). I also have a little trouble distinguishing between the various Scandinavian accents.

"Smaug" as in "Smorgasborg" as in "Smawgasborg." That's what I think.
