hello! i recently joined this web page after i read the hobbit and the first of the three lotr books. i love his works and would very much love to get more into the world of tolkien. ta ta for now!
Hi Lady Arwen. Tell us more about yourself - who you liked best in the Hobbit and LotR, how old you are, where you came from & why you chose that nick.

There only seems to be a handful of members who actually post postBodys. and yes, thank you, i've finally passed the 100 mark so i've been promoted to 'friend'.
Thank you to all who have been so supportive in diligently replying to my rather incoherent posts and to the moderators, Taz and Grondmaster for not deleting too many of'em.

hi there Lady_Arwen! welcome to da forum.

hi there Lady_Arwen! welcome to da forum.

*diligently replies to Rosie's rather incoherent post*

wahey! Congratulations Rosie, and Allyssa too!
And Plastic, eight ****ing hundred? No way!!!
*whispers*
Grondie, can't you halve his total or something? To level the field, so to speak.

Every night he tries, and every day I just whack it back up there again. There's just too much quality material in there to cut it down any further!

Like that humongus snip-it on Balrog wings
If the Skwrl spent more time on quality instead of quantity, he'd now be pushing Rosie for the lead; but only if the rest of us also had to meet that standard.
Yup less than 200 to go before the Skwrl gets to be called 'Moderator'. (Especially if Taz sees this.) Or maybe 'Librarian' with a gold plated "Oook" badge.

Librarian would be nice, but I still want Nazgul. And don't forget the terribly helpful Sauron post...

I made it to a guide! Hurray! (I wanted to be a Balrog or sth, that would scare the hell out the new members!)
Librarian, why not?
I'm halfway down to being a moderator!

I hereby ask all the other new members to this forum to come here and introduce themselves, so we can have a better view on who and what you are!

okey dokey ungolient.. in the hobbit i have to say i liked gollum the best. In lotr i loved arwen (duh) and legolas, he was wise beyond his years. Im from dallas texas (tad borring, i wish i lived some where interesting!) and i chose this nick name because arwen was so mystical in the movie, i loved it! what about you all?

Hey Lady_Arwen,
does your signature mean something? If yes, what? (I think that made sense!)

isn't that what's inscribed on the Ring? I think I recognize the ash nazg part...
yep! it says:
One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.
chilling huh?? i love how gandalf says it in the movie!

I am going to be releasing another one of our monthly newsletters tonight so expect it in your inbox later tonight.
I shall give the forum a mention as to see if we can attract anymore of those 'invisible' members in here.
Planet-Tolkien might slow down for half an hour though as the mail server chugs out emails to all 562 + of our members :-)

what in the world are you talking about, Boring?
chika, Boring was pointing out that Rincewind is a missing member too. The 2nd one was in response to Grondy's 'Ook' post
It's a Discworld thing.
Is there a monkey in the house?

Taz! Stop sending the news letter out! I've got four of them now, and nice as it is, I think one would have been enough

I hadden't thought about it. just thought i had read an Oook! after Plastics comment on being librarian or nazgul

Gee, I only received three Newsletters.
[Edited on 27/1/2002 by Grondmaster]

Surprises me too...
I got three newsletters as well.

hey I only got 3 too...i guess Plastic's just specialer than all the rest of us...
I've really got to read those Discworld novels...too bad my library doesn't seem to have them (though the card catalogue insists they do...)

Has no-one thought of the possibility that I have both a really bad memory and an inability to count?

No, because Plastic Squirrels are hydrocarbon based. It is the silicon based trolls who have trouble counting, they seldom reach three without intensive tutoring.

This Plastic Squirrel however, can now count to 1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh come on Grond, you've got to let me celebrate this one.

Yah, you bet! Congratulations on making a mille. I also like your new status name, welcome to the club.

Woohoo...congratulations Plastic! I've no pseudo-Simarils to give you, but since this is a special occasion, have a Porky Scorpion.
Moderator eh? Does he have to take the oath, the King's shilling and be given his weapon of choice?

It's only a nominal title I'm afraid, I tried to mess about with some posts earlier, but it wouldn't let me (which is probably just as well, lets face it!)
lol pfeww but still no nazgul status
btw where has Tommi gone to?[Edited on 30/1/2002 by Boring]

Yeah where is Tom? I miss him, he agreed with me all the time...

She is probably doing her homework and usually shows up on weekends.
Hurrah! I'm not the only one who gets it wrong!

I'M BACK!!! Haha!
Grondy was again right.
Have an aching lot of homework and no time to make it, so I decided not to try... No, really. Have made the most of it now, and I still have tomorrow.
Even I got the librarian thingy!
Does that say sth about you, Chika?
Moderator is about the same status as the Nazgul thingie, don't you think. Scares the hell into you. Plastic's a moderator. AAAARRRRGHHHH!!! :P

Greetings to all of you!
I am new here as well, so I'll just answer the same questions that Lady_arwen did. I am 14 years old and i come from Huddinge, which is a small suburb to Stockholm in Sweden. I have only read the Hobbit once so I don't have a very clear image of the dwarves, and therefore I'm going to have to say Bilbo. In the LoTR, which I have read about five times, my favourite is easily Aragorn. Being "transformed" from Strider (which you think is evil) into the great king that he becomes in the end (or I mean, he is the great king from the beginning, but Tolkien doesn't show it, well, you know what i mean :P). My favourite bit is probably the sequence in Moria when the Fellowhip is in Mazarbuls chamber (probably, it's not Mazarbul's chamber in English, but since I don't have LoTR in English it's a bit hard to know
) and Gandalf reads from that book.
I chose this name based on what my name would be if I would have been born as an elf
according to the elf name generator at http://www.barrowdowns.com [Edited on 12/2/2002 by D’rwingiel]

Welcome to the forum D’rwingiel, I like your name.

I didn't recognize your "Mazarbuls" at first, but when I went to look it up, I found it. In the English versions it is the "Chamber of Mazarbuls" the "Chamber of Records" where Balin's Tomb is located. That was a sad time for Gimli to find out his uncle was indeed dead, and dangerous too: My favourite bit is probably the sequence in Moria when the Fellowhip is in Mazarbuls chamber (probably, it's not Mazarbul's chamber in English, but since I don't have LoTR in English it's a bit hard to know

Welcome from me too Durwingiel (can't get to grips with daft punctuation, sorry).
No need to read the Hobbit that many times anyway, it's not as good
Recognised the Chamber of Mazarbul straight away, tis not very differently named after all!

Hi Durwingiel. So what does your name mean then?
Thank you, and thats the bit I mean! Well, gotta go watch the other topics!
Actually, I don't know what it means...
Is there some "what-does-your-name" mean generator or what?

Hey Durwingiel! (I can't get the nice little ^ thing on top of the u...does anyone know how to do that without a special keyboard? Because I know shortcuts for accents and things, but I can't make them work here)
and I think in the back of the Sil there's an index with what parts of names mean, so maybe if you look through there you could figure your name out.

Chikakat: There is a big discussion on that hidden elsewhere on the board; however, I can't remember where.
So: What you want to do is run a program called charmap.exe which is probably in your C:\WINDOWS folder. When you run it double click on the symbol to get it into the little window, then click copy button, and paste it into your text. I had to ask too. I think it was Sauron who pointed out that we had such a program.

ooh...thanks Grondy

actually, I tried to buy silmarillion today, but my local bookstore was sold out
but it must mean something with tower I presume, since its got d’r in it (the sindarin word for tower)

ok, I looked it up...
d’r = dark
wing = foam/spray
iel = random name-ending type thing
So, you are dark foam spray.

Which must mean D’rwingiel is a sea-elf. Or a brewer of stout.

Oh yeah, d’r was dark, not tower (you know from barad-d’r
) . And by the way... I chose the feminine form of my name because i liked it better than the masculine form, which was D’rwingion.

Hey! I'm here. You don't need to e-mail me or anything. I spend a lot of time in the Prancing Pony. I also don't get a lot of time online, but here I am!
