I too think The Hobbit is the likeliest movie material... If they won't mess with it, as they've done with some (alas, too many!) parts of LotR, I don't see how they could ruin it. Let's hope for the best, Elfstone!

YES!!!! ME too!!!!! Just don't screw up, PJ. I think it's more hopeful for the hobbit as there's less of it and one doesn't feel the need to miss out so much.

I apologize because I should have copied them to a tavern; however it is too late now and as they wrote that they knew they were off topic, they could have done it right in the first place, instead of holding their conversations here.

As Figwit is the Legolas for the thinking women, i'd say : "Ladies, charge!".

The Hobbit the movie will absolutely not be the same. Our esteemed Master Grond has already pointed out the reason - there is not a single female part! Indeed, except for a brief mention of Bilbo's Mom ("the fabulous Belladonna Took"), there are no references to females. Does anyone imagine that such a state of affairs will be allowed to remain in a big budget hollywood movie?? I've already seen suggestions of Arwen and female dwarves; let's try a "girl" friend for Bilbo. Instead an auction of his home going on at the end, maybe we can have the hobbit lass he was in love with getting married (sadly thinking him dead of course). He can arrive just a few minutes too late. Or make Smaug female, with morphing abilites so that she can become a golden seductive figure bearing a striking resemblance to Cate Blanchett. Or how about Beorna?
Her were-bear talents allow her to rule the lands around the Carrock witha tight fist. Any other suggestions? I don't think female trolls would really fill the Bill - so to speak.

It might save them the work but then think about the lawyers of both the firms who'll be working overtime after the movie has come out.

I don't know, they might even have a wife of King Thingol and maybe they could show a young Legolas surfing on the waters on the Long Lake. (C'mon he must have learnt to surf everything somewhere)

I can't believe I missed this for more than a year, but King Thingol?! Make that King Thranduil.

I'll just say that the Return of the King could've been a lot worse. So I'm actually relieved.

Or maybe a character similar to Medusa, the snake woman from Greek mythology whose head, instead of being covered with hair, was covered with snakes. Just looking at her would turn you to stone, unless you used a mirror to view her reflection similar to the technique Perseus used in removing her head.

David Lynch would've delivered an adaptation faithful to the spirit of the book, unlike PJ's, which is accentuated around action and humour. It's like PJ made a more dark version of Willow.

Lynch made Dune which is very faithful to the book even though the dire lack of resources Lynch had to work with.

where do you get the idea that the elves in TH are small? I must go back and re-read it i guess.

P.S are elves small, I read they were playful, but certainly not small, let me check.......

It really dosen't say they are small, indeed, they also, in the book at least, seem to be warriors, and also scholars, I don't know where you got small from...

Since tallness came up: one of the Elves is even noted as tall when the Dwarves arrive.

Over the years Tolkien appears to have changed his mind about the stature of his Elves, at least in relation to Men. I've never specifically looked into the 'Silmarillion texts' of the period concerned (about the time The Hobbit was written) to see if there's any indication of how tall the Quendi were imagined then...

... but late texts have them quite tall! and so these heights arguably become descriptive for the Elves of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and Silmarillion of course.

At least quite tall by our standards today.
