If the discussion goes ahead and you feel you need to question me about where a quote came from etc, try using e-mail. Afraid until I get this problem sorted out it's the best I can manage.
Okay, you know the rules... If not check out the very first post in this thread... Basically, Don't write your answers here, e-mail them to me at or send them via Private Message accessed through "My Account" on your left on the Main Menu.

Wow it looks like we have a pretty smart group here. Congrats to everyone.

Val, thanks for the quiz it was really a lot of fun.
A new one! Read Smilie

Cool! Printing it out now, will start working on it during the week! Something to tease my brain with again! Big Laugh Smilie

Thanks Val! Hoping to complete this one this week and wanna send the answers next weekend.
46 was hard!!! That one took me forever to get. Found it by pure accident, while looking something else up.

You might try looking in the appendix of each book. There is a wealth of information in them, and at least 2 of the questions you are having problems with are in there, maybe all three, don't remember.

Prog, my copy of the Silm is brand new, but FoTR is taped together so many places, and RoTK is not far behind. TT is ok, because I lost it for a long time, and just found it again on Sunday.

After you two finish, we can private postBody each other and comepare answers. lol
I am dying to see what people have gotten for #6. That is the only one I may have gotten wrong. I hope.
Awesome Val! That must have taken you forever! There do appear to be two 94s though, should we just put both in the answers?
My email still does not work, can I private postBody you my answeres, please?

Oh and btw I finished it yesterday, except for one question. Exploding Head Smilie I just can not figure it out. I am really stumped, but I am still looking.

[Edited on 9/9/2002 by MelliotSandybanks]
I'm assuming we are allowed to look up the answers. If we're not, let me know sos I can give up now! I am no expert on the Silmarillion! Dunce Smilie
Prog, if we were not allowed to look them up, then I can't turn mine in. I can't spell, so the ones I did know, I still had to look up just to make sure it was spelled correctly
Number 60 was easy. It was 86 that I was having problems with which I was having problems.

Oh, and Val, in reference to #60, how many cats did this person have?

I know but I'm not telling. nah nah nah. lol

You have to remember I am the Kat lady. I have 10 of my own.

Sheba Ann
Brown Mama
Stray Kitty
Dew (Dumb Dumb Kitty)

Do you really think I would miss a reference to a cat in any book?

[Edited on 10/9/2002 by MelliotSandybanks]
I figured out the one I was soooo stumped on. It was in The Unfinnished Tales. YIPPPPEEEEE!!!!!!! I have now finished the entire brain teaser.

Mellie is really happy! Tongue Smilie Smoke Smilie Very Big Grin Smilie Birthday Smile Smilie Pixie Smilie Pary Smilie Ha Ha Ha Smilie Tigger Smilie Kiss Smilie Exclamation Smilie Elf Winking Smilie Thumbs Up Smilie Super Wow Smilie Jumping Flame Smilie Super Scared Smilie
There do appear to be two 94s though, should we just put both in the answers?
Whoops, I managed to edit out the two 29's that I'd put in but didn't find the 94's... Yes, put them both in as 94's.
My email still does not work, can I private postBody you my answers, please?
No problems, Mellie... Anyone who cannot get me by e-mail, send them as private postBody.
I'm assuming we are allowed to look up the answers. If we're not, let me know sos I can give up now! I am no expert on the Silmarillion
I'm certainly not going to go around checking you haven't got a book hidden under the table... It's for your enjoyment. Do it however you please... Just don't write the answers in this thread.
I figured out the one I was soooo stumped on.

I bet that was number 60... I figured only real Tolkien freaks would get that one.

Good luck everyone.
Oh good. I wouldn't want to be labeled a cheater!

I'm roughly 75% done at this point. Unfortunately the remaining 25% may take me to the end of September since my copy of The Silmarillion, which is as old as me BTW, does not take kindly to rapid page turning. I've already accidently ripped a couple pages out while leafing for answers. I think it's time to go buy a new copy...

And it doesn't help that my copy of The Hobbit seems to have sprouted legs and made good its escape. I just had the damn thing the other day!
This really is a tough one, but I'm proud to say that I've nearly finished it. Think I'll finish the lot today. Can't find 38, 40 and 46 however... Sad Smilie Proud to say that I did find 86 and 60... If they're right, that's another question... Big Laugh Smilie

Found those now, with a little help from... Big Laugh Smilie
Only gotta solve 13 questions now. Still planning to finish it today and mail them all to ya, Val. Big Smile Smilie

[Edited on 10/9/2002 by TomBombadillo]
Yippiieee!!! I finished the whole brainteaser!! With the help of Melliot, Proggy, Rednell and Tuesday (whom I met in the chat), who helped me solve those questions I couldn't possibly find. If there's anything I can do for any of you, let me know, I'll do my best to help you out then... Big Smile Smilie Mailing it to you now, Val.
I consider that to be an unfair advantage, but then what do I know. Wink Smilie
You didn't have to put that in twice, you know, Grondy. I figured as much when reading it once... Winking Smilie Big Laugh Smilie

You should have popped into the chatroom then, Grondy, and joined us in our "discussion". Tongue Smilie
Just eight days to go, folks. How are you all doing? For those who are interested, a second brainteaser is 30% complete.

Look forward to seeing your answers.
Can't wait to find out how I did, and see the next one Val.
You are tops so far Mellie.... but there again, only two replies have come my way so far.

Anyone else thinking about sending in answers, you have until midnight GMT, September 30th.
Tommy and I are the only 2 that have sent in replies, so far????

Come on people get busy. The quiz is not THAT difficult.
Shh! Hush up Mellie! That makes you first and me second, right! I'd like to keep it that way! Tongue Smilie

How did I do, Val? Very good, good, average, bad, very bad? Big Laugh Smilie
I sent mine in last night and automatically have three wrong as they were unanswered due to I had not a clue where to find the answer--I even looked through The Guide Project. Very Big Grin Smilie As a representative of the council I can not collect a prize, if there is one, or keep someone else from placing higher in the standings. I don't remember how the disclaimer goes that one hears or reads in the small print about contest and such, but it should be applicable here too--of course if there are only three entries..... Animated Wink Smilie
So I'm definetely third now. Big Laugh Smilie If no one else has send in their answers that is, of course.
Well Val, hope you got more brainteasers. I know Prog was really working hard on his and so was tuesday. How long will it take you to post the answers and/or the results. I don't care about the results but I am dying to get some answers to a coulple of the questions.
Well, Mellie, the moment you've been waiting for. As of now, the quiz is closed and the answers are below. I only received three replies, but those who replied all did really well.
Read Smilie Well done to you all. Read Smilie

You are doing much better than I am, however, I am in the chatroom every evening if you would like to pop in and compare notes.
psst: we just won't tell Val.

Tommy, you beat me this time. I am really struggling with this quiz. But I am also down to 3 questions. What bugs me, is I remember reading the answers to these some place, but I can't find them anywhere. Yes, 26 is one of them, the other 2, I just feel really stupid and won't admit which they are.

Ok, now I am down to just one more question. # 26. Thanks for the idea of looking it up on the net. I had just kept scouring the books. (Mine are now about to fall to pieces)

[Edited on 22/10/2002 by MelliotSandybanks]
ok, after the quiz is over Val, I wanna know where you found question #26. I can not find the answer anywhere. I do remember reading it when I read the books the first time, but I CAN'T FIND IT NOW!!!!! When I read it the first time I remember thinking 'how convient' or something to that affect. It was too planned, and did not seem to fit in with the rest of the story. I kinda think it is near the end, but I have almost re-read RotK 3 times since this quiz started. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 words Kids, Encyclopedia of Arda, look for it on Google, and you'll get everything you need (sorry Val)
Thanks Plastic, I tried that, but 26 is not there. It list all of the jewels but not which was found in Isengard, after the defeat of Saurman.
ok, after the quiz is over Val, I wanna know where you found question #26.
Oh dear.... Just spent the past half hour searching for it myself. Knowing the answer, however, I had some idea of where to look and eventually found my source. The same source, incidently, has been mentioned in another thread by me somewhere else in this forum, but concerning another topic (haha... Now Mellie must go and check every one of my posts and cross reference them until she finds it.)

It is a hard one though, and I think the answer will be a little controversial. At first I was puzzled enough to go back and check it was correct.
3 words Kids, Encyclopedia of Arda, look for it on Google, and you'll get everything you need (sorry Val)
No problems, Plastic. Will the same site help me when it comes to setting the next quiz?
What, no yeah right's? No, your full of **** prog!?
Only if you try the same tactic this time around. As it was you came joint last with everyone else who didn't reply Wink Smilie
Sorry guts I couldn't finish the quiz, but now I have more time than I did before, looking forward to the next quiz and this time, I'm really finishing it.
3 words Kids, Encyclopedia of Arda, look for it on Google, and you'll get everything you need (sorry Val)

Now Squirrel, where is the challenge in that? The challenge is half the fun (the other half is the frustration).

I remember reading about the jewel, but for the life of me cannot find it. I thought it might have been in Flotsam and Jetsam, but so far I can't find it there.
No problems, Plastic. Will the same site help me when it comes to setting the next quiz?

Yep, full of useless information, and probably the best source of Tolkienite stuff I've ever found. I did have a pop at your quiz Val, I managed to do about 18 questions from memory, and worked out where I could probably get the answers to the others from, but couldn't be bothered in the end, ah well. Might get round to it later...

Oh and, I suggest you all look in your appendices, or check the back end of the Sil, never forget that it's got LOTR stuff in the end bits as well....

Been there done that. No, Val, I have not YET cross reverenced all of your posts yet. Nell, I also tried Flotsam and Jetsam. But I think I have discovered the answer. Me winks at someone who will remain nameless. Thanks. I hope I helped you as well. We really should compare the rest of our answers.
Val, I was going to take your suggestion, and check you ALL of your posts, but you have almost 700. I just can not do that at the moment. At least you don't have as many as Tommy.
Hey Tommie, i thought you said we had until the 9th to do the quiz! i've got finals until the 8th and i'll post the answers that night for you. I don't know about everyone else, but the 9th is perfect timing.
